THE MAIN THEATRE - AUDIO GUIDE
AUDIO GUIDE TRANSCRIPTION
The Main Theatre is built where the old “Patio de Comedias” used to be. A “Patio de Comedias” is a type of open-air theatre where theatrical presentations were held in the XV and XVI centuries in Spain.
In 1773, the site is acquired by the Town Hall to construct a modern theatre. The theatre was planned to be shaped as a horseshoe. The construction began in 1802.
In the year 1820, the theatre suffered a devastating fire. In July 1837, the Main Theatre was opened again.
Over time, the Main Theatre has suffered lots of modifications. One of the most important was directed by Jerónimo Arroyo, a famous architect from Palencia. Mr. Arroyo gave the Main Theatre the appearance you can see today.
The last modification was inaugurated by Queen Sofía, on June 1st, 1993.
