ST. PAUL CHURCH - AUDIO GUIDE
AUDIO GUIDE TRANSCRIPTION
The monastery of St. Paul was founded in the XIII century by Santo Domingo de Guzman (a former student of the University of Palencia). It was supported by Alfonso X and Sancho IV, that is why there are some members of the royal family buried here.
It had political influence, because a General Chapter of the Preacher Order and General Courts were held there.
The monastery disappeared in the XIX century due to the Independence War and the first Carlist War.
Nowadays, we can only see the church. It is a National Monument since 1931. Its facade is in neoclassical style and it is divided in two parts: the lower part is divided in columns; and the upper part has a bell tower.
The church has a basilica ground plan. It has three parts separated by columns with ribbed vaults. This is the oldest part of the church.
The Main Chapel was constructed by the Marquises of Poza. There are beautiful sculptures in it. The bars of the Main Chapel are in Renaissance style. They were made by Juan Bautista Celma. The Rojas family ordered the construction of the main altarpiece in the Main Chapel.
