The cathedral of Palencia is built where an ancient Roman city was. The construction started in the XVI century, and it finished in the XVI century. The cathedral has different styles: Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque and Renaissance.
The oldest part of the Cathedral is the Vault. It has 2 parts:
In the Main Chapel we can find an altarpiece and a choir. Over the choir, there is a Baroque organ.
Behind the Main Chapel, there is the retrochoir. It is Gothic and Plateresque styles, and it is made of stone. In it, we can see eight painting panels that represent the life of Blessed Virgin Mary. The reading of these painting panels starts in the lower right panel, and then, you should continue reading in a clockwise direction.
In this part of the Cathedral, there is a pulpit made of wood. It was made in the XIV century.
Behind the retrochoir and the pulpit there is a gothic sculpture, the “Cristo de las Batallas”, where the soldiers used to go to pray before going to battle.
At the beginning of the ambulatory, we can find the Capilla de los Reyes. It is in Plateresque style. Here you can see the sculptures of the 3 Wise Men.
The outside of the Cathedral is decorated in a very simple way. It is a simple and restrained building.
The Cathedral has five doors. The most important one is the door of the Obispo. The door of the Bride and the Groom, and the door of San Juan are also important.
