THE CANAL OF CASTILE - AUDIO GUIDE
AUDIO GUIDE TRANSCRIPTION
The Canal of Castile was built in the XVIII and XIX centuries: from 1753 to 1849. The construction was very expensive, because it was very complex and difficult to build.
The purpose of the channel was to create a quick and easy system to move goods and people between the inner areas and coastal areas.
The Canal has a length of 106 kilometers. There are 49 locks that have a slope of 148 meters.
In 1840 the Canal of Castile reached Palencia, thanks to the construction of a branch. This branch finished in an inner harbour. In that inner harbor, boats loaded and unloaded people and goods. The boats reached the inner harbour thanks to mules: they pulled the boats.
With the construction of a railway, the Canal of Castile lost its importance, so it was used as an irrigation canal.
